Renewal Story: Spencer

Posted: December 19, 2018

“I would walk the streets most of the night in fear of where I was going to lie down. I wouldn't rest until maybe three o'clock in the morning.”

After 20 years of heavy drinking, the 18 months that Spencer wandered the streets were the lowest point in his life. The only time he found any relief was when he came to Union Gospel Mission of Tarrant County for a hot meal. “It was the kindness I was shown that kept me coming back,” he says.

In 2018, your kindness made UGM-TC a place of rest, compassion and hope for hurting people like Spencer by helping to:

  • Serve 412,414 hot, nourishing meals to hungry men, women and children.
  • Provide 240,039 nights of safe shelter to people who had nowhere to sleep.
  • Support 142 program graduates who later secured jobs and moved into permanent housing.

Spencer soon discovered that it’s never too late for a new beginning. He plans to get his Commercial Driver’s License and build a fleet of trucks over the next few years. “I think I’ve got a pretty good future!” he says.
