Gary's Story

Loved by a Whole Lot of People

Sometimes, Gary still runs into his old “friends” in the neighborhood around Union Gospel Mission of Tarrant County.

“Man, you look good!” they tell him. “You don’t look like yourself.”

“I know I look good,” he says confidently.

“You don’t want to get high with us?” they ask.

“I am high already,” is his answer. “I’m high for Christ.”

A New Family
When Gary’s mother died in 2002, grief sent him into a downward spiral of addiction and shame. “I didn’t have the desire to do nothing,” he says emphatically. “I used to think I couldn’t do anything, because I was always weak and high on drugs. If you don’t feel good about yourself, you ain’t going to do nothing.”

So for Gary, healing really began when he recognized his infinite worth in God’s eyes — a truth he discovered thanks to your support. “I learned through chapel and through classes. We go through ALPHA and we talk about what we think about God, and the problems He went through when He tried to help us, how He died for everybody’s sins. I believe a lot about Christ now. I didn’t care about it before. All I desire to do is get in the Word of God all the time.”

Gary also learned that he has a whole community of people who care about his future. “If we’ve got problems, we can go to [staff] and talk to them like family,” he says gratefully. “I’m loved by a whole lot of people here.”

Going Strong
This new understanding helped Gary conquer his weakness in Jesus’ Name. “I’ve been going strong since I had Christ in my life. I don’t desire to do drugs anymore. I have my job and everything. I’ve got a better drive on myself.”

In fact, this man who once had no plans for the future now dreams of his own home, and even a family! “I can see further in my life,” he explains. “I can see going further with the stuff I know. I plant the seed and God will grow it.”

Every day, your support helps more men like Gary discover their true worth…and take the steps they need to become healthy, independent men of God.

Thank you for being part of a community that cares!
