Colonial Tournament Chairman Chuck Scherer (left) and President Jeff Moten (right) present Don Shisler with a generous donation from Birdies For Charity at the annual breakfast in November.

UGM-TC benefits from Birdies For Charity

Union Gospel Mission of Tarrant County was privileged to be one of the select, local organizations to benefit from the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial Country Club in May, 2011. Prior to the golf event, UGM-TC gathered pledges from generous friends for the tournament’s annual “Birdies For Charity” campaign. The pros then did their part by making an impressive 1,268 birdies during the championship. Final dollars from the campaign were collected and distributed to participating charities in November. Thank you to the Crowne Plaza Invitational, Colonial Country Club and our faithful supporters for helping our neighbors in need!

UGM-TC Attends the National ALPHA Conference

Nicky and Pippa Gumbel came to the USA to lead the National ALPHA Conference at Irving Bible Church, November 13-15 which several staff members and residents had the joy of attending. By special invitation residents were included in the Friday evening activities. Fifty five residents were taken by chartered bus to Irving Bible Church, where the conference was held. The hospitality was warm indeed. Our residents enjoyed a delicious Bar-B-Que dinner. The focus of the evening was on prayer and worship, and included testimonies from people whose lives were changed because God was real to them because of ALPHA. One of the testimonies was from Michael Scott, a former resident, now an employee and student at Southwestern Baptist Seminary.

UGM-TC Residents participate in the ALPHA Program and experience spiritual transformation.

ALPHA Program Blesses UGM-TC Residents

Thursdays at UGM-TC are “Spiritual Development Days.” Over the summer, “The Jesus Lifestyle” ALPHA course was offered. This course covers the Beatitudes, or Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7). Thirty two trained volunteer ALPHA leaders and three hundred twenty three residents participated. Eighty Eight persons had perfect attendance. God is working His purpose out at UGM-TC!

Union Gospel Mission of Tarrant County, TCU & More than Budget$ partner together to help our residents learn to use their resources to end their cycle of homelessness.

Fighting Homelessness through Financial Stability

Here at UGM-TC, we seek to provide for the whole person – the body, soul & spirit. One of the many ways we do this is to provide classes and instruction for everyday living, including in one’s finances. Through a partnership with TCU, several of our residents recently graduated from a financial literacy program called More than Budget$. More than Budget$ seeks to encourage financial stability for the homeless who are temporarily housed in homeless shelters like Union Gospel Mission of Tarrant County. Together, UGM-TC & More than Budget$ are motivated to help the homeless in our community learn how to use their resources, however small, in ways that will help to reduce the chances of remaining homeless. Thank you TCU & More than Budget$ for your invaluable partnership!

UGM-TC won $10,000 for receiving the 1,929th donation on Texas Giving Day - ultimately helping hundreds of men, women and children find lasting hope and life change.

The Homeless Blessed On Texas Giving Day

Thank you to all who supported UGM-TC during North Texas Giving Day! On September 15th UGM-TC had the privilege of taking part in the third annual Texas Giving Day, an online event hosted by DonorBridge and benefiting hundreds of nonprofits in 16 surrounding counties. Notably, Union Gospel Mission of Tarrant County won $10,000 for receiving the 1,929th donation, a prize honoring the year The Dallas Foundation was founded! We thank God for his continued provision through the donations of generous friends throughout the community – we wouldn’t be here without you!

Don Shisler with Susan G. Baker -- guest speaker at this year’s annual banquet, “Be the Blessing: Pass it On.”

2011 Banquet

We want to thank everyone who attended our annual banquet on September 22, and the many generous sponsors and volunteers who made it possible! With the theme “Be the Blessing: Pass It On,” we celebrated everyone who has given of their time, talents, and treasure to serve the poor in our community this year. We’re very grateful that so many also chose to give at the banquet, to help provide a truly merry Christmas to our guests and residents. Even if you couldn’t be one of the 650 guests at the banquet, please know that we thanked God for your compassionate partnership!

Your gifts help provide cool water...filling meals...safe shelter...and a retreat from the brutal summer heat to the poorest of the poor in Tarrant County.

Dangerous Summer Heat

During the sweltering summers in Texas, it can be unbearable for the homeless in the area. At UGM-TC, we are actively helping address the potential issues that come with the heat. Not only can people come and cool off inside when they have a meal with us, but we are also making sure that everyone who does leaves with either a water or Gatorade. Also, throughout the day, our staff helps to re-fill the bottles if need be. If you would like to give a gift today to help provide the homeless among us with a safe haven from the brutal heat, please CLICK HERE. Thank you!

Thanks for making this an unforgettable summer for the boys and girls at UGM-TC!

A Summer of Hope for Homeless Children

This summer, the children living at UGM-TC are participating in various day camps throughout the Fort Worth area. It’s a great way for the boys and girls to stay busy and learn new and exciting skills. Some of the camps they are attending include Red Canoe Summer Reading Camp, Vacation Bible School at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church and College for Kids, a camp affiliated with FWISD and Tarrant County Community College. Students must be honor roll students in order to attend College for Kids and we’re happy to say that we have 5 children on full scholarships attending this year.

Thank you San Miguel Episcopal Church

On June 15, The Vacation Bible School of San Miguel Episcopal Church in southeast Fort Worth donated hygiene kits for the girls and boys at the Mission. Our Chaplain, Stanley Maneikis, and President, Don Shisler, went to collect the kits and spoke with the kids about UGM-TC. While there, the kids sung and danced for them and Father Diaz took them on a tour of the church. We’re so grateful to have the community partner with us to reach out to help the poor and homeless of Tarrant County. We couldn’t do it without you!

Generous Grant to Bless the Homeless

On May 25, 2011, Father Stanley Maneikis (UGM-TC Chaplain) and Dr. George Curl (UGM-TC Education Coordinator), accepted a $30,000 grant from the Ann L & Carol Greene Rhodes Charitable Trust through Bank of America on behalf of Union Gospel Mission of Tarrant County. The purpose of this grant is to provide food, tutoring, transportation and healthcare for the homeless. With the dangerous heat of summer upon us, this grant will be quickly put to use to help our residents and guests stay cool and hydrated! Thank you to the Ann L & Carol Greene Rhodes Charitable Trust for partnering with us in this God-ordained outreach to the poor & homeless!

Thank you, Temple Christian School's Seventh grade class!

Temple Christian School Donates 121 Bibles!

On Monday, May 9, Don Shisler (President of Union Gospel Mission of Tarrant County), accepted 121 Bibles from the Seventh Grade Class at Temple Christian School in Fort Worth. Children’s Bibles, Bible story books and adult Bibles in various translations were collected. Mothers and children alike now have access to these Children’s Bibles and Bible stories in our Children’s Library. With a high demand for Children’s Bibles, we’re certain these donations will be quickly put to use! Thank you Temple Christian School for helping to make the Word of God available to our guests and residents!
